Description : The motorized howitzer of 203 mm M110 is
assembled on the same frame as the self-propelled gun M107 of 175 Misters
One will refer, for his history, at the heading devoted to this last. L E
M110 was brought into service within US Field Artillery in 1963. It is now
deployed at a rate of a battery equipped with four parts per division of
infantry and a battalion with twelve parts per armoured or mechanized
division. The mass production had ceased towards the end of the Sixties,
but it began again after 1970 at Bowen-McLaughin-York, where always the
production of the recent models takes place. M110 equips Army and the US
Navy Body. Many countries (Germany, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, South Korea,
Spain, Greece, Holland, Will go, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Pakistan,
United-Kingdom and Taiwan) use it already or placed order. In the majority
of the cases, and, in particular in Europe, the United States also
provides the hardware necessary to their modernization. The frame of M110
is out of shear steel. The pilot is placed at before left in an armoured
cockpit. The engine is on its line. The mouth with fire is assembled on
mounting with the left back of the machine. The suspension is with torsion
bars. It includes/understands five large wheels of road, whose last one
acts stretcher wheel. The sprocket-wheel is with the front one. There are
no rollers support. In position of shooting, the suspension is blocked in
order to increase the stability of M110. the howitzer of 203 mm MÀ2 is
former to the Second World war. It is assembled on a M158 mounting. It
points in site of - 2° with + 65° and in azimuth on 30° on the right
and on the left. These operations are assisted hydraulically, but hand
drive operations of help are envisaged. The MÀ2 does not have a brake of
mouth nor of crest gate of smoke. The block-cylinder head is with screw.
With the back of the frame, a device of loading makes it possible to raise
the projectile of the ground and to push it in the room. The following
shells can be drawn: HE of 92,350 kg; HE carrying 104 or 195
sub-projectile; to agents GB or VX; nuclear tactics. M110 itself
transports only two projectiles and five men (head of edge, pilot and 3
gunners). The remainder of the ammunition and the crew is on board tracked
M548. the crew of M110 is absolutely not protected from the glares from
shell, the shootings of light weapons or an environment NBC. Of the
studies are actuellemnt in progress to mitigate this low register in convénient,
and a safety device should be delivered soon. All M110 American were
converted to standards M110A1 and M110A2. The M110A1 has a longer tube;
its range is 21.300 m with normal shells HE and 29.100 m with shells with
additional propulsion. Other ammunition can be employed: conventional
improved, with agent GB or VX, nuclear tactics. The M110A2 is equipped
with a brake of mouth which allows the use of nine propelling loads M11Å1
against a load of eight for the M110A1.
